01 Dec What is Cortisol?
It’s that time of year. Time for a physical. You think you’ve done a decent job of eating the right foods and maintaining a proper exercise regimen. The intake nurse asks about your eating and exercise habits. Your square your shoulders as you talk about your daily jog, your weight-lifting habits and your diet high in protein and low in carbs. You’re feeling pretty good about yourself but then the harder questions come. Do you smoke? Well maybe a little. How much alcohol do you consume. Do I have to answer that? You get a little honest and then your doctor starts hounding you about your liver and toxins and cortisol.
Corti-what?
Cortisol is the body’s main stress hormone. When you feel stress, your body releases this hormone to help bring balance. It controls mood, motivation, and fear. Cortisol is made by the adrenal glands and manages carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Cortisol helps lower inflammation and regulates blood pressure and increases metabolism. This stress hormone also helps control the sleep/wake cycle.
When cortisol doesn’t work appropriately, it can cause headaches, digestive issues and trouble sleeping. Unbalanced cortisol can be responsible for unexplained weight gain and weight loss, acne, and irregular cycles in women. If you are experiencing fatigue, nausea, vomiting, muscle weakness or pain in the abdomen, cortisol levels could be the culprit. Cortisol can also cause deeper issues like anxiety and depression.
There are ways to keep your cortisol levels healthy. Be sure to eat well. Eating healthy and proper exercise can balance cortisol levels. Get some rest, too. Meditation and yoga can bring down high levels of cortisol. There are a few other things that help with cortisol levels: positive outlets, laughter and music.
